Euclid's most influential work, the Elements, served as the primary textbook for teaching mathematics from its publication until the early 20th century. In it, he deduced the principles of what is now called Euclidean geometry from a small set of axioms. While little is known about his life, his systematic approach to mathematical proof and logic laid the groundwork for the scientific method and Western rational thought.
