A major figure of 19th-century poetry, she is best known for Sonnets from the Portuguese. Her work often challenged social injustices, including slavery and child labor. Her epic poem Aurora Leigh addressed the difficulties faced by women artists. She lived much of her life in Italy following her secret marriage to Robert Browning, becoming a symbol of romantic and intellectual independence.
