"We are all people, we are all human beings."

Natalya Petrovna, a bored landowner's wife, falls in love with her son's young tutor, Belyaev. However, her ward Vera is also in love with him. The household becomes a tangle of jealousy, manipulation, and unexpressed emotion. In the end, no great tragedy occurs; the tutor leaves, and life returns to its quiet, melancholy routine.

Turgenev's play is a precursor to Chekhov. It focuses on the internal lives of the characters rather than external action. It is a delicate study of love, boredom, and the subtle shifting of relationships in a closed society.
