Atonement – Ian McEwan by Ian McEwan

"It was not possible to stop loving her."

On a hot summer day in 1935, thirteen-year-old Briony Tallis witnesses a flirtation between her older sister Cecilia and the housekeeper's son Robbie Turner. Misunderstanding what she sees, she accuses Robbie of a crime he didn't commit, destroying their lives. The novel follows Briony's lifelong attempt to seek atonement through her writing, from the chaos of Dunkirk to the London Blitz.

Ian McEwan's novel is a powerful exploration of guilt, the nature of storytelling, and the impossibility of undoing the past. It is a heartbreaking love story and a brilliant metafictional inquiry into the limits of forgiveness.
