"Two nations; between whom there is no intercourse and no sympathy; who are as ignorant of each other's habits, thoughts, and feelings, as if they were dwellers in different zones, or inhabitants of different planets."

Charles Egremont, an aristocrat, falls in love with Sybil Gerard, the daughter of a Chartist leader. Through their story, Disraeli exposes the brutal divide between the rich and the poor in industrial England. He argues for a 'One Nation' conservatism where the aristocracy fulfills its duty to protect and improve the lives of the working class.

Written by a future Prime Minister, this novel is a key document of social history. It dramatized the 'Condition of England' question and helped shape the political philosophy of the Victorian era.
