The Fall of the House of Usher – Edgar Allan Poe by Edgar Allan Poe

"There was an iciness, a sinking, a sickening of the heart."

An unnamed narrator visits his childhood friend, Roderick Usher, at his crumbling ancestral home. He finds Usher and his twin sister Madeline suffering from a mysterious illness and a deep, hereditary madness. As the physical house begins to crack and fissure, so too does the sanity of its inhabitants, leading to a terrifying climax of premature burial and total collapse.

Poe's quintessential gothic tale is a masterclass in atmosphere and psychological horror. It blurs the line between the physical building and the family line, exploring themes of isolation, madness, and the physical manifestation of fear.
