In the industrial city of Coketown, Thomas Gradgrind raises his children, Louisa and Tom, on a strict diet of facts and statistics, suppressing all imagination and emotion. The result is a family tragedy: Louisa enters a loveless marriage, and Tom becomes a thief. The novel contrasts their sterile world with the vibrant, chaotic life of the circus people.

Hard Times is Dickens's shortest and most polemical novel. It is a savage critique of Utilitarianism and the dehumanizing effects of the Industrial Revolution. It champions the importance of fancy, wonder, and the human heart against the cold logic of the machine.
