Sybil, or The Two Nations – Benjamin Disraeli

Charles Egremont, an aristocrat, falls in love with Sybil Gerard, the daughter of a Chartist leader. Through their story, Disraeli exposes the brutal divide between the rich and the poor in industrial England. He argues for a 'One Nation' conservatism where the aristocracy fulfills its duty to protect and improve the lives of the working class.

Written by a future Prime Minister, this novel is a key document of social history. It dramatized the 'Condition of England' question and helped shape the political philosophy of the Victorian era.
