The Histories – Herodotus

Herodotus, often called the 'Father of History', chronicles the rise of the Persian Empire and its conflicts with the Greek city-states, culminating in the Greco-Persian Wars. His narrative is a vast tapestry of ethnography, geography, and folklore, describing the customs of the Egyptians, Scythians, and Babylonians alongside the military campaigns of Xerxes and Leonidas.

This foundational text invented the genre of history in the Western world. While sometimes blending myth with fact, Herodotus's inquiry into the causes of war and the diversity of human culture established the method of historical research.
