"Another heavenly day."
Winnie is buried to her waist in a mound of earth under a blazing sun. She spends her time examining the contents of her bag (toothbrush, mirror, revolver) and chattering cheerfully to her mostly silent husband, Willie. In the second act, she is buried up to her neck, unable to move, yet she continues to maintain her optimism and rituals.
Beckett's play is a shocking and poignant metaphor for the human condition. It depicts the relentless encroachment of time and death, and the terrifying, heroic persistence of the human habit of living and hoping in the face of extinction.
