Charles Lyell argues for 'uniformitarianism'—the idea that the Earth was shaped by the same slow natural processes we see today (erosion, sedimentation, volcanism) acting over immense periods of time, rather than by sudden biblical catastrophes. He presents evidence that the Earth is millions of years old.

Lyell's book transformed our understanding of the Earth's history. It gave Charles Darwin the deep time he needed for his theory of evolution and established geology as a modern science based on observation of the natural world.
