Le Cid – Pierre Corneille par Pierre Corneille

"To conquer without risk is to triumph without glory."

Rodrigue and Chimène love each other, but their fathers quarrel, and Rodrigue is forced by honor to kill Chimène's father in a duel. Torn between her love for Rodrigue and her duty to avenge her father, Chimène seeks his death while Rodrigue goes to war to prove his worthiness. Their tragic dilemma explores the conflict between personal desire and social duty.

Corneille's play is a cornerstone of French tragedy. It introduced the 'Cornelian dilemma'—an impossible choice between love and honor. Its grand style and heroic sentiments defined the classical age of French theater.
