"I am a sick man... I am a spiteful man."
A retired civil servant living in St. Petersburg retreats into his 'underground', a state of bitter isolation and hyper-consciousness. In a rambling, contradictory monologue, he attacks the ideals of rationalism, progress, and utopia, arguing that humans are irrational creatures who will always choose suffering and chaos over a perfect, calculated happiness.
This novella is considered the first existentialist novel. Dostoevsky's anti-hero is a disturbing, prophetic figure who challenges the optimistic assumptions of the modern age. It is a profound exploration of free will, spite, and the darker corners of the human psyche.
